Mobility vs Flexibility: What's the Difference?

They're Not the Same

Flexibility: Passive range of motion (how far a muscle can stretch)

Mobility: Active range of motion (how far you can move with control)

Why It Matters

You can be flexible but not mobile:

  • Can touch toes when someone pushes you
  • Can't control movement at end range
  • Flexibility without strength = instability
  • What you actually need: Mobility (controlled range of motion)

    Examples

    Flexible but Not Mobile

  • Can be stretched into splits
  • Can't actively lift leg high
  • No strength at end range
  • Mobile

  • Can actively reach end range
  • Has strength throughout
  • Controlled movement
  • What This Means for Training

    For Flexibility (Passive)

  • Static stretching
  • Held positions
  • PNF stretching
  • For Mobility (Active)

  • Dynamic movement through range
  • Strengthening at end range
  • Controlled articular rotations (CARs)
  • Loaded stretching
  • Which Do You Need?

Most people need mobility more than flexibility.

    Focus on:

    1. Being able to actively reach positions

    2. Having strength throughout range

    3. Control, not just passive range

    The Bottom Line

    Mobility vs flexibility:

    1. Flexibility = passive — How far you can be stretched

    2. Mobility = active — How far you can move with control

    3. Mobility is more useful — Control matters

    4. Train both — But prioritize mobility
